Citilink Cold Weather Precautions

By January 22, 2026No Comments

At Citilink, our mission is about more than getting from point A to point B. We know that for many in our community, public transit is a lifeline of connecting people to work, healthcare, school, and essential services, even when the weather is harsh.

During periods of extreme cold, our goal is simple: to keep people connected while prioritizing safety. We encourage everyone to take extra precautions, plan ahead, and do what they can to stay warm with the upcoming cold snap. Whether you’re a daily rider or traveling only when necessary, we hope you stay safe and warm during this cold weather.

Track Your Bus Before You Head Out

When temperatures drop into dangerous territory, knowing exactly when your bus will arrive can make a big difference.

You can track their bus in real time using Citilink’s Track Your Bus tool, available directly from the homepage at fwcitilink.com by clicking the Track My Bus button or by visiting: https://swiv.citilink.cadavl.com/SWIV/CITILINK

Checking real-time bus tracking before heading outside can help limit time spent waiting in extreme cold and better plan your trip.

Citilink Service During Extreme Cold

As winter temperatures plunge and wind chills reach dangerous levels, Citilink wants you to know what to expect and how to stay safe while traveling.

During periods of extreme cold, Citilink will continue operating regular service schedules and does not anticipate service changes or delays based solely on low temperatures. Conditions are closely monitored and we will let you know if weather impacts service through our Rider Alerts blogpost or by our texting service.

Citilink buses may also serve as a temporary warming station for riders traveling with a valid bus pass who need brief relief from the cold while traveling. We just ask that you switch buses every other hour please!

How Extreme Cold Impacts Buses and Operations

Sub-zero temperatures and harsh wind chills can challenge any transit system, which is why we plan for winter weather year-round.

Our buses undergo regular maintenance, with winter inspections placing added focus on systems most affected by cold weather including batteries and HVAC performance to support reliable service. Vehicles are also stored indoors overnight in our bus barn, helping buses start more reliably in the morning and reducing the impact of extreme cold on equipment.

Safety for Drivers and Riders

Safety is always a top priority for both our drivers and riders, especially during extreme weather.

Drivers receive winter weather training, and buses are equipped to provide warmth throughout the trip. We are always watching for changing weather conditions and takes necessary precautions to keep service running safely.

When possible, our maintenance team works to salt and clear sidewalks in front of shelters to help reduce slipping hazards. Riders should still plan ahead and use caution, as surfaces may be slick.

Tips for Riders Traveling in Extreme Cold

Riders can help stay safe and comfortable by:

  • Dressing warmly in layers and covering exposed skin

  • Planning ahead and allowing extra travel time

  • Using caution when boarding and exiting the bus and holding handrails

  • Using a flashlight or phone light during early morning or evening hours so drivers can see you

  • Checking real-time bus tracking before heading outside when possible

As we navigate this cold winter weather together, we ask you all for a little extra grace and patience for our staff, our drivers, and for each other. Cold conditions can make travel more challenging and kindness goes a long way.

Thank you to our frontline teams and to our riders for planning ahead and traveling safely!
