Beginning Monday, March 2, Citilink will implement service updates affecting parts of Southeast Fort Wayne. These changes are now final and reflect months of analysis, rider input, and careful consideration of how to best provide reliable transit in a challenging funding environment.
We recognize that changes to familiar routes can be disruptive, and we appreciate your patience and engagement as these updates take effect.
Why These Changes Are Happening
Citilink, like many transit agencies across the country, faces long-term financial pressure. More than 90% of our funding comes from local taxes and federal grants. The expiration of temporary COVID-era federal funding, flat state support, and ongoing cost inflation created a budget deficit projected between $2.7 and $3.9 million over the next four years.
At the same time, travel patterns across Fort Wayne have shifted. To remain reliable and sustainable, Citilink must regularly evaluate how service is delivered and ensure resources are focused where riders need them most.
These changes were informed by:
- Ridership data
- Destinations most riders travel to
- Driver and operational feedback
- Transit dependent population data
- Community input
While difficult, these updates are necessary to keep Citilink strong and dependable for the future.
What’s Changing on March 2
Route Consolidation and Renames
The Southeast Local (Route 5) has been retired. Routes 7 and 7A have been combined into a single updated Route 7, Anthony. Route 6 is being renamed Southeast. Coverage is maintained through updated Routes 3, 6, and 7.
Expanded Route 3 & 6 Coverage
Routes 3 and 6 now provide improved access along Hanna St., Fairfield Ave., Calhoun St., Pontiac St., and Lafayette St., serving key apartment communities and Bowen Health.
A new direct connection from Pontiac Street Market to Central Station improves access to fresh food and essential services citywide.
