FORT WAYNE, Ind., (Feb. 4, 2025) — Citilink marked Transit Equity Day with a call for increased investment in public transportation and the unveiling of fare capping, a new initiative ensuring riders never pay more than the cost of a monthly pass—making transit more affordable and equitable.

The event, held at Electric Works, commemorated the 112th birthday of Rosa Parks, a civil rights icon whose actions helped desegregate public transit.

Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker issued a proclamation recognizing the importance of equitable transit and accessibility.

“As we commemorate Rosa Parks’ birthday on Transit Equity Day, we are reminded of the pivotal role that public transportation plays in shaping a just and equitable community. We must ensure all residents have access to the opportunities they deserve, and that begins with equitable, accessible transit. Fort Wayne is committed to building a transportation system that uplifts everyone and strengthens our community as a whole,” said Mayor Tucker.

John Metzinger, General Manager of Citilink, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how Citilink is working to ensure fairness and accessibility for all riders.

“Public transit is about more than mobility—it’s about opportunity,” said Metzinger. “Fare capping ensures that no rider pays more than they should, regardless of how they pay. This change reflects our commitment to fair, accessible transit for everyone.”

Citilink also highlighted its newest universal bus shelter, designed in partnership with and located at Bowen Health’s Goshen Road location in Fort Wayne. This universal bus shelter is in addition to the shelter unveiling at Turnstone in 2024.

These shelters feature:
● Space for up to four wheelchairs
● A lean bench for those unable to sit
● An outdoor bench for individuals experiencing social anxiety
● Glass panels that create a feeling of openness for those who struggle with claustrophobia

“Healthcare access starts with transit access,” said Jayme Yates, Director of Community Engagement at Bowen Health. “The new shelter at Bowen Health removes barriers to ensure that more people can reach essential care. We hope this will inspire other organizations to collaborate in advancing transit equity.”

Building on the theme of accessibility and equity, Citilink also highlighted the success of the Rosa Parks bus, introduced in 2024 with artwork by Fort Wayne artist Theoplis Smith III (Phresh Laundry). In its inaugural year, the bus attended 25 community events and transported over 36,000 riders, reinforcing how public transit can serve as a powerful tool for connecting individuals to critical opportunities in their communities.

However, as John Metzinger, General Manager of Citilink, pointed out, the challenge of securing adequate funding for public transit remains. “Transit is a public good that benefits everyone, yet funding remains a challenge,” Metzinger said. “We urge our leaders to invest in public transportation to build a stronger, more inclusive Fort Wayne.”

The event also recognized Ernie Johnson, a retired Citilink driver, with the presentation of the inaugural Rosa Parks Transit Equity Award. The award honored Johnson for his lifelong dedication to serving the Fort Wayne community. His legacy exemplifies the impact of public transit in creating equitable access to opportunities.

Following the ceremony, attendees had the chance to experience the Rosa Parks bus firsthand by riding it to Bowen Health, where they saw the new universal shelter in action, before returning to Electric Works.
