FORT WAYNE, Ind., (Jan. 27, 2025) — Citilink invites the community to the commemoration of the 112th birthday of civil rights activist Rosa Parks on Transit Equity Day with a special event at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at the Forum at Electric Works, 1690 Broadway Bldg. 19, Ste. 10. As part of the commemoration events, Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker will read a proclamation honoring Transit Equity Day.
Rosa Parks, famously known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, played a significant part in ending legal segregation on public transportation systems in the United States. Her courageous act of refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery, Ala., bus sparked a wave of protests and ultimately led to a landmark Supreme Court ruling against segregation.
Citilink recognizes the profound impact of public transportation in fostering an equitable environment within the community.
At its Transit Equity Day celebration in 2024, Citilink introduced a bus featuring custom artwork inspired by Rosa Parks, created by Fort Wayne artist Theoplis Smith III, also known as Phresh Laundry. The Rosa Parks bus attended 25 special events and transported over 36,000 riders during its debut year.
The public event will begin at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 4 at the Forum at Electric Works, concluding by 11 a.m. where guests are then invited to ride the Rosa Parks bus to the new Universal Shelter at Bowen Health and back to Electric Works. Guests are encouraged to park in the Wall Street Lot next to Building 36 just west of College Street.
