Citilink Announces Proposed Fare Price and Policy Modifications with Public Input Sessions

By August 20, 2024August 27th, 2024No Comments

FORT WAYNE, Ind., Aug. 20, 2024 — Citilink is hosting a series of input sessions and a public hearing regarding proposed changes to its fare pricing and policies for 2025 at the Allen County Public Library’s main branch, located at 900 Library Plaza in downtown Fort Wayne.

Public Meetings Schedule:

Public Input Sessions: 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27
Public Hearing: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3

Citilink invites everyone to attend these sessions to share their opinions and learn about the proposed changes. A sign language interpreter will be present at the meeting as well.

As part of the proposal, Citilink plans to replace the current Genfare Odyssey fareboxes on all fixed-route buses with new fare validators. This upgrade aims to enhance fare validation through automation, reduce vehicle downtime for farebox maintenance, and eliminate the$30,000 maintenance costs per bus associated with the Genfare system.

The Genfare fareboxes will continue to accept payments for at least another year, but Citilink plans to eventually transition all fare media to the new system. Throughout these changes, Citilink will maintain its commitment to offering discounted fares for individuals with disabilities, seniors (60+), youth (ages 5-18), and those with a Medicare card.

John Metzinger, General Manager and CEO of Citilink, said the organization has not substantially changed its fare policy or prices in over a decade and the time has come to update fare structure and policy.

“We’re committed to maintaining reduced fares for those who qualify and ensuring that our service remains affordable. If approved, these new fares will take effect on April 1, 2025, with Access Plus fares following on July 1, 2025. Our goal is to create a more efficient, equitable, and sustainable transit system for Fort Wayne,” he said.

These proposed changes reflect Citilink’s dedication to improving the travel experience for Fort Wayne residents. The transition to new fare validators and the promotion of mobile ticketing are designed to streamline fare payment and enhance passenger convenience.
